My Geek Box Review – December 2015

My Geek Box is one of the growing breed of geek boxes that ships from within the UK. It’s also part of the same family of companies that releases the Zavvi ZBox each month. Recent boxes have seen them both developing a rather similar style of contents, with rather weak contents included.

I still have ongoing problems with the subscription payments that have been taken for boxes and nothing received. This is also a box which is very hard to cancel once you get on their list. This does mean that I keep receiving boxes each month (I’m currently prepaid for most of 2016 if the overpayments aren’t refunded) so hopefully the contents will be good.

Unusually, everything arrived this month in a supersized brown cardboard box, about double the usual size. During the unboxing, it was found that the usual small My Geek Box branded box was inside, along with one additional item that wouldn’t fit.

Delivery arrived smoothly through Royal Mail. There is never a notice when these boxes are sent out, which is a pain when trying to plan to be around to catch the post.

The subscription price within the UK, paid on a monthly basis, is £17.99 GBP ($27 USD). There are small discounts available for prepaying several months in advance.

My Geek Box does not provide an information card, which always means that some detective work is needed to work out what the items inside the box are. The theme for December 2015 was KO.

Box Contents

Gueken Dojo T-Shirt

This is a Street Fighter reference. It’s not the most inspired T-Shirt, coming on white stock, but the logo looks good.

I’ll value this at $10 USD, which is the standard amount I use for T-Shirts.

Bruce Lee Fanatiks Figure

This unusual addition to a geek subscription package is the reason for the extra large box.

This is a 2013 release from Flex Series 3, part of the Fanatiks collections of primarily sport related figures.

The packaging alone takes up much of the space that a standard box would. It’s not something that I would have purchased separately, but it is nice to have in a geek box.

You can buy this Bruce Lee Fanatiks Figure on Amazon.com.

The typical selling price is around $10 USD.

Street Fighter Unlimited #1 Comic (Exclusive Cover)

There have been lots of Street Fighter comics in the past, but this is the first in a new ongoing series, published by UDON.

The cover price is $3.99, although this is an exclusive My Geek Box cover. Unfortunately, this didn’t come bagged.

I will give this a quick read, although probably not a series that I’ll follow further.

DC Comics Badges

This is a set of six logo badges, all from popular superheroes, and arriving in an official sealed package.

Much nicer than some of the badge sets that appear in geek boxes.

There are lots of DC comics badges available on Amazon.com.

I can spot some of these badges there, but not this exact set.

A value of $1 USD each for these official badges seems reasonable – that’s $6 USD total.

Dragonball Z Photo Mug

This mug arrived in a plain box and a warning to wash carefully due to the photographic printing.

It is good to look at, even for someone like me who has never watched Dragonball Z.

There are many Dragonball Z Photo Mugs available on Amazon.com.

These photo mugs sell for a lot of money. I’ll go for a midpoint value of $15 USD.

Box Review

A good My Geek Box theme and a good selection of items.

Although there are only five items, this has restored my faith in My Geek Box after several lacking months.

I make this $45 USD of value. Even better, there are no items that I consider worthless. For once, even the badges are decent.

My favourite item is probably the mug. It will look great as a subtle display piece and to use for guests. I do like the figure and the other items as well.

The T-shirt is wearable, but will never be a favourite, as this just can’t be compared with the standard of T-Shirts coming from other companies, particularly Nerd Block.

I really hope that My Geek Box can keep up the good work.
