Lootchest Geek Box Review – December 2015

One of the most interesting of the monthly boxes to subscribe to is Lootchest, mainly because there are few subscribers outside of its native Germany.

Lootchest does do its bit to make its service accessible to non-Germans. The website contains an English section to help orders and the mini magazine inside contains a short English language section. Of course, some items do arrive in German, but that can provide intrigue as well.

A monthly subscription costs 32.93 euros, approximately £24 GBP or $37 USD including the premium for shipping to the UK. Discounts are available if you subscribe for more than one month at a time. You can also upgrade to a premium box with an additional item.

The box arrived in the middle of December, well-packaged, although I don’t recall seeing a shipping notification. Within the UK, the box was delivered by Royal Mail, which was convenient.

There is no theme to these boxes, but there is a useful small magazine inside with details of the contents.

Box Contents

Imperial Academy T-Shirt

This is a cool T-Shirt design and fits in with the Star Wars link, as seen in loads of boxes this month.

There are lots of Imperial Academy T-Shirt available on Amazon.com and they sell for surprisingly expensive prices. I’ll stick with the standard T-Shirt valuation of $10 USD.

Star Wars Space Punch

This is billed as a vitamin drink rather than an energy drink, although my German isn’t quite strong enough to pick out the full details of the ingredients. I have tried this and it has a pleasant peach flavour.

Definitely the type of unique and novelty item I like to receive in geek boxes. There may well be a similar version in the UK, but I’ve not come across it.

I’ll value this at $2 USD for the can.

Captain America Tin

This is just an empty tin and one of four possibilities shown in the Lootchest magazine.

It’s big enough to be used to store small items and will come in handy.

I’ll value this at $5 USD, but it probably sells for more.

Batman Arkham Knight Batmobile

This is one of six possible Batman vehicles shown in the Lootchest magazine. This one is based around the video game.

You can buy the Batman Arkham Knight Batmobile on Amazon.com. It sells for around $8 USD.

A nice change to have something like this in a mystery box.

The Inner World Special Edition Game

This is an adventure style game available on Steam. As of writing, this is in the holiday sale for about $3 USD. I do find it difficult to value downloadable games in a physical box.

Hopefully, this code works for the English language version, as this game looks quite interesting.

Not sure what the difference is between the Special Edition and the regular game.

Star Wars #1 Comic

I like these German language comics. These are presumably reprints from the original. They do something similar in the UK, binding multiple stories from US editions into a single thicker UK comic and adding letters, local adverts and other features.

This is a September release and billed as the first in a new series. As best I can tell, this is reprinting the January 2015 Marvel Star Wars comics 1 and 2 in a single volume (and translated into German). This is the first two parts of the Skywalker Strikes story arc.

The cover price is 4.99 Euros. As this is a few months old and a reprint, it’s hard to value, but a figure of $5 USD seems reasonable.

Box Review

An interesting and varied box. I get $33 USD of value, which is very slightly below the box cost price, but that’s made up for with the items that aren’t easy to source in the UK.

There’s no real low value filler here items, which is a good. I’ve enjoyed looking at the comic artwork, so I might now try to find the English language version.

The T-Shirt and car are good too and the tin is useful.

It is possible to subscribe to a higher Plus tier of Lootchest. This month, that tier would have come with an additional Halo themed T-Shirt.

Lootchest is something of an enigma, clearly being catered towards the German market (there is a small premium, for instance, to cover the shipping to the UK). I’m impressed enough to be continuing with my Lootchest subscription.
