I’ve picked up another short-term subscription to Loot Crate following a recent special offer. This worker out well, as I was able to rejoin with the appealing theme of Invasion.

Loot Crate is never the fastest with delivery from the USA to the UK, but this box arrived without issue, with the final part of the delivery coming through the UK’s Royal Mail.

The Loot Crate box size changes every month to match the contents. This one was larger than usual, but still smaller than other subscription boxes.

The normal price for Loot Crate, including shipping to the UK, is $29.95 USD (£22 GBP) for a one-month subscription.

Box Contents

The X-Files T-Shirt (Exclusive)

This is a cool T-Shirt design for a show that I’m glad to see has returned to TV screens.

The standard of the artwork (and of the T-Shirt itself) is higher than many of the recent Loot Crate boxes. The design came about through a competition with Threadless. Hopefully, that collaboration will work in Loot Crate’s favour (rather like the relationship that their rival Nerd Block has with Shirt Punch).

The black background, with print in shades of green, really works for me.

I value this at the T-Shirt standard of $10 USD.

Space Invaders Vinyl Figure (Exclusive)

Looks like there were three different invader colour schemes available here, of which I received the orange variant.

This is small and boxed and will work well on a shelf. I wouldn’t mind getting the others in the series to go with it.

There are several Space Invaders licensed items available on Amazon.com. in all the shapes reminiscent of the original invaders.

Based on the pricing of other similar small vinyl figures, I’ll value this at $8 USD.

The Fifth Element Replica Pass (Exclusive)

This is a fun pass holder, chunkier than many. In theory, the ID card can be replaced with your own, although you’d lose the black indented plastic strip down the left hand side, so it may look a bit strange.

I’ve no real recollection of this from the original film, but it is an exclusive.

There are many pass holders available on Amazon.com. Prices and styles vary. An $8 USD valuation seems reasonable.

Alien Phunny Plush (Exclusive)

It took me some time to work out, but the idea is that this can be held across your face using a large elastic band (also included in the box). It is designed as a “friendlier” version of the monsters seen in Aliens.

Really, this is just a fun plush.

You can see a similar Alien Plush on Amazon.com. This one looks identical to me, but without the scary eyebrows and underlip marking. It’s amazing how a small amount of extra stitching can change the look of a character.

I’ll stick with another $8 USD valuation here.

The X-Files LED Flashlight (Exclusive)

This is a useful item and it’s really pleasing to see that the batteries were included as well.

Prices for LED flashlights on Amazon.com vary a lot. This one has the added coolness of being an item associated with The X-Files.

I’ll use a $10 USD value here.

2 Movie Mini Art Prints (Exclusive)

The pictures are 9″ x 6″ in size and depict two classic 1950s movies, The Day The Earth Stood Still and The War Of The Worlds.

These are on thin card and come in an envelope for protection.

These would look great framed. Looking at them, I’d love The War Of The Worlds artwork in poster size.

My normal valuation for prints is $2 USD, so I’ll use $4 USD as the total for the pair.

Loot Crate Mini Magazine

This fun magazine comes with the box each month, providing details of the items, short articles and cross-promotion.

No value to assign, but it’s an item that’s good to have.

Invasion Badge and Letter 44 Digital Comic Download

The badge has been upgraded this month, a much more involved design and it comes on a card backing.

The badge also includes access to a digital download of the first issue of Letter 44, which is an older comic which usually sells for 99c.

I haven’t included either of these items in the overall box value.

Box Review

This is a strong box, carrying $44 USD of value.

Every item is an exclusive and, unusually for geek boxes, every item carries real value. I’m not including the obvious bonus promotional items like the mini magazine, badge and downloadable comic here.

A fantastic T-Shirt design, which bodes well for Loot Crate’s expansion with a separate T-Shirt subscription box each month.

The other items are all fun as well and this box again shows how far a sensible theme choice can take a box.

Loot Crate has really upped its game and comes highly recommended.
