Loot Crate Level Up Socks Review – May 2016

Loot Crate is still running. Current pricing is in the box directory.

I’ve picked up Level Up, a clothing mystery line from the Loot Crate family, several times now. The contents are varied, but a lot of it comes down to style choices and how well the clothes fit.

The safest line for me has been the geekie socks line, which gives you two pairs of mystery socks each month, which share the same theme as the main Loot Crate box. So, I went for another sock subscription with the May 2016 theme of power.

The package did arrive safely, but unfortunately this arrived with the top cut open. It had been put in the letter box of a neighbour by Royal Mail and they hadn’t noticed that this wasn’t their delivery. Although there was no real harm done, this does raise continued questions about the security of mail.

On the plus side, these are small envelopes that they do fit straight into letter boxes, so there’s no waiting around for packages to be delivered.

The standard month-by-month subscription price for the Level Up socks is $12.99 USD (£9 GBP) including shipping to the UK. This is cheap for a geek mystery box, but seems fairly pricey for socks, so I pick these up mainly for the entertainment value.

The envelope had a folded poster included instead of the previous booklet about the contents. One side had a large picture of four people wearing the items. The other side had descriptions of the different Level Up subscriptions (socks, wearables, accessories and T-Shirt).

Box Contents

Masters Of The Universe Socks (Exclusive)

These socks show He-Man if he was blue! A slightly strange choice.

They are a nice enough pair of thin crew socks, made by Bioworld.

My standard pricing for geek socks is $10 USD and these fit right into this price band.

Super Mario Socks (Exclusive)

These ones are rather disappointing, mainly because they are more of a feminine design.

I suspect that doesn’t matter too much, but they won’t work with most of the clothes I wear, which are work outfits.

They are thicker sports style socks, again made by Bioshock. These ones didn’t come in plastic packaging (unless this was removed by my neighbours).

I’ll use the standard value of $10 USD here.

Box Review

Not the best socks package here from Loot Crate. I’ve had far better from Level Up before.

Now, based on the valuation alone, at $20 USD, this is above the cost price. But this is hampered a lot by one pair of socks that is unlikely to get worn by me (although I’m sure these will end up being worn by a friend).

The designs are also rather lacking to me this time.

With that said, this is a low risk subscription if you’re getting involved with the geek mystery world. And, if you like geekie clothing items other than T-Shirts, there isn’t much in the way of competition so Level Up will continue to offer something unique.

Frequently asked

Answers generated from this review during the 2026 rebuild.

Is Loot Crate still available?+
Loot Crate is still running, so this review of the May 2016 Level Up socks envelope is kept as an archive of that particular month rather than a guide to what ships today. Current pricing for Loot Crate is listed in the site's box directory.
What was inside the May 2016 Level Up socks envelope?+
Two exclusive pairs arrived in the May 2016 Loot Crate Level Up socks envelope: a Masters Of The Universe design showing He-Man in blue, made by Bioworld, plus a Super Mario pair cut in a thicker sports style. A folded poster setting out the Level Up tiers came in place of a booklet.
How much did the Level Up socks subscription cost?+
Loot Crate charged $12.99 USD, about £9 GBP, on the Level Up sock line at the time of the May 2016 delivery, and UK postage sat inside that figure. The reviewer read that as low for a geek mystery subscription yet steep for two pairs of socks.
Was the May 2016 Level Up socks envelope worth it?+
Using the reviewer's own $10 USD figure per pair, the May 2016 Loot Crate Level Up envelope reached $20 USD, ahead of what it cost. The response was still lukewarm, because one of the two pairs seemed unlikely to be worn and the designs fell flat.
What was the theme of the May 2016 Level Up socks?+
Power was the theme of Loot Crate's May 2016 Level Up socks delivery. The sock line takes its theme each month from the main crate that month, and for May 2016 that theme was power.
