Kewel Boxes Geek Box Review – November 2015

Kewel Boxes is a brand new geek subscription box shipped from within the UK. It arrived on the market quietly, clearly a labour of love, so I’m not 100% sure, but I believe that this was their first ever box.

First impressions were good. This arrived on time, although without a shipping notification. It was also delivered by one of my least favourite courier firms. This was shipped in a very basic box at present, but everything arrived without damage.

The standard subscription price for Kewel Boxes, paid by the month, is £19.98 GBP ($30 USD). That includes shipping within the UK. International shipping is available at a premium and there are small discounts available when signing up for three and six month subscriptions.

The theme for the November 2015 Kewel Boxes was Timey Wimey, with the promise of Doctor Who items. The box came with an information sheet, which is always handy for finding out more about everything that’s included. The box was also rather light in weight compared to others on the market.

Box Contents

Doctor Who Action Figure – Twelfth Doctor

It’s been quite a few year since I collected action figures, but I do like this one.

I have various vinyls and the like of the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, but none of the Twelfth, so glad to add this one to my collection.

This is part of Wave 4 of the BBC Doctor Who figures.

You can buy the Twelfth Doctor figure on Amazon.com. The US prices are rather inflated to cover the import costs – the UK standard retail price is £7 GBP ($10.50 USD).

Dalek Key Ring

This is a good size rubber key ring which will be comfortable to place in a pocket.

There are a lot of key rings in geek boxes, so I now have quite a collection that I never use – but I might give this one a go.

There are lots of Dalek key rings available on Amazon.com. I’ll value this one at $5 USD.

Dalek 3D Flannel

The second Dalek item in the box is an unusual flannel.

Essentially, this feels more like a reusable sponge than a flannel. It’s the kind of item that I’d have never come across without a geek box subscription, but which will get some use.

These sell at various UK online stores for £4.50 GBP each ($7 USD).

Sontar-Ha Stickers

This is a tiny box (half the size of a box of matches) filled with tiny stickers to do with Sontarans.

There are three different sticker designs. Two of these feature the popular character of Strax. And, there are about 20 stickers in total.

I can’t find much about these online, although I can see that they were given away with Doctor Who Adventures (the Doctor Who magazine for a younger audience). I’ll place a value of $1 USD on these.

Doctor Who Micro Figures in Display Brix (x2)

These are blue bricks, compatible with lego, each of which contains a small Doctor Who figure.

These are the blind box style figures, so it’s a mystery which one will be included in each box. Based on the mini pictures, these are from the Eleventh Doctor era. There have been several sets of these released – this looks like the earliest.

You can buy the Doctor Who Micro Figures on Amazon.com.

Like many blind box figure ranges, these are surprisingly expensive to collect, particularly as you’re likely to get duplicates before completing a set. A typical selling price in small quantities is £3 GBP each, which I equate to $9 USD for the two.

Sonic Screwdriver Poster

This is a high quality poster, sealed in plastic and depicts the Sonic Screwdriver as used by the Tenth Doctor.

I haven’t attempted to take a photo of the unrolled version, but you can see this Sonic Screwdriver poster on Amazon.com.

This is a good sized display poster, long and narrow at 36″ wide and 12″ high. The typical selling price is around $6 USD.

Selection Of Sweets

Sweets are always great to have in boxes. Most of these are retro in nature, so fit in with the Timey Wimey theme.

The sweets include a small roll of Swizzels Fizzers, two Wham chews (cola and strawberry flavour) and a packet of strawberry flavour Sparx Popping Candy. Yum!

As a group, I’ll value these at $1 USD.

Doctor Who Drawing From Art Jimbo (Exclusive)

This is a specially commissioned print of artwork from James Mooruth, who uses the moniker of Art Jimbo.

This is a black and white pencil drawing featuring the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors. It comes along with a letter providing information about the artist.

Items like this are hard to value. Art Jimbo does advertise original commissions on his website at affordable prices.

I’ve been using $2 USD as the standard valuation for prints, so I’ll stick with that value here.

Box Review

There are a lot of items included here, which is always good.

I make that $36.50 USD of value, which is slightly more than the box cost price.

What I do like is that there’s nothing here which is rubbish and there are some items, such as the Dalek 3D Flannel, which would be hard to find otherwise.

As a Doctor Who fan, the contents work well for me.

I would have liked to have seen a main item in the box. There’s nothing really that fits the bill – the closest equivalent is the Peter Capaldi (Twelfth Doctor) figure.

I’d also liked to have seen more from the classic series of Doctor Who, rather than just the 2005 relaunch. I enjoy both, but the classic era is more my thing. A tie in with a company like Big Finish would have helped here.

As it is, I applaud the launch of this new Kewel Boxes crate. I will certainly be digging in again in future months.
