As well as their regular monthly themed ZBox subscription box package, Zavvi have started to release special limited editions, each aimed at a particular market.
The three Gamer Editions were recent examples, with boxes aimed at fans of Nintendo, the Playstation and the XBox.
When I originally reviewed the Nintendo Gamer Edition Zavvi ZBox, I wasn’t too impressed, but took advantage of a recent discounted offer to check out the XBox version of the Zavvi ZBox.
Without the discount, the standard price for the Special Edition ZBox would have been £19.99 GBP ($28 USD). That price is identical to the monthly subscription box.
Delivery within the UK was also included and this box arrived with me as part of a larger package and delivered by Royal Mail. The box was sent the day after the order with two day delivery and the contents arrived in a specially printed green box, although the front of the box was slightly dented and damaged.
The box promised items relating to several different Microsoft XBox games franchises. There was information card included with the ZBox, but generally the contents were fairly self-explanatory, even to a someone like me who isn’t really an XBox gamer.
Box Contents
Halo T-Shirt
This is a simple T-Shirt, black with a small amount of transfer style grey print. I believe that it’s an exclusive, although it’s not clear from the packaging.
The text on the left says “Cadet” and the logo on the right says “UNSC Corbuld Academy of Military Science”, which I believe references a location in Halo.
It’s not terribly inspired, but as it’s black with simple text it will be easy to wear.
I’ll use the standard T-Shirt value of $10 USD.
Gears Of War Baseball Baseball Cap
The second clothing related item in the box is this Gears of War baseball cap.
I think that this is the first time I’ve received a cap in a box before (I have had a winter hat before), but it’s a nice thing to receive.
It just fits as well, even though I have a big head.
Unfortunately, this was an item that arrived slightly damaged, with the material split at the front of the cap in two places, exposing what’s inside. Where the logo is stitched on also comes slightly worn. A pity, as this is in a good grey colour.
This is a 2011 release, so rather old, and like many items in Zavvi boxes, this is produced by the UK Bioworld company. This is an official licensed item.
There are a whole selection of Gears of War cap available on Amazon.com.
For pricing, I’ll go at the lower end at $10 USD (although I should really knock off few dollars due to the damage).
Halo Mega Bloks Series 8 Blind Bag
I quite like getting these little blind bags inside boxes, because even though I wouldn’t go out and buy them, it’s fun to see what’s inside. They also make every version of a standard geek mystery box into something that’s slightly different.
This is part of Series 8 of the Halo Mega Bloks blind bags, designed to be compatible with other Mega Bloks. I believe that these are also compatible with Lego items as well.
There are eight characters to collect in this series. Most of the blind bags contain a figure, a weapon and an associated block, which presumably doubles up as a stand. There are also two non-humanoid characters included. From reviews, it seems that there are also some chase characters with unusual colours, but these aren’t mentioned on the packaging.
This isn’t the newest release, as these appear to have gone on sale in late 2013.
You can buy the Halo Mega Bloks Series 8 Blind Bag on Amazon.com. The listed retail price for a single blind bag of Halo Mega Bloks when these originally went on sale was $3 USD although these are likely leftover stock.
Halo Mug
This is a nicely boxed and official mug, with Halo artwork, including the well-known Halo helmet, printed across. It is made by the UK company GB Eye.
As a printed piece, this looks impressive.
You can buy the Halo mug on Amazon.com. The price I’ll use for valuation is based on that figure, at $13 USD.
Although I’m not a Halo player, I like the design of this mug and am quite happy to have it included in the box.
Halo Last Light Book
I’m used to TV programmes having spawned spin-off books, but I haven’t yet got into the gaming franchise tie in novels yet.
This might be my chance to start.
This is a recent release, published in September 2015. You can buy Halo Last Light by Troy Denning on Amazon.com.
The typical selling price is around $10 USD.
I’m always keen to receive books in geek subscription boxes and this one gets good reviews. I’m hoping that there isn’t too much backstory and that I can dip right in with this one.

Box Review
Quite happy with this Zavvi ZBox. I make this $46 USD of value, which is well above the cost price, and certainly above the reduced price I paid. The contents of the XBox ZBox are much better than the Nintendo ZBox I got from the same line.
In fact, it’s interesting how different the interpretations of the briefs were for all three of the Gaming Edition ZBoxes.
I do particularly like the mug and the book. I would like the cap as well, apart from the fact that it’s damaged, and that’s a big downer when it comes as part of a box like this.
One concern I do have is that this box may have been a customer return which was then sent out again. That’s due to the damage to the box and also the damaged cap. This may have happened in transit, but is unlikely, as this box arrived packaged with other items that had no obvious damage.
Some people may have also been disappointed that all of the items, apart from the cap, related to Halo. To me, that isn’t a big deal, particularly as I like the items, but it should have been possible to make these more varied.
This also shows that Zavvi are capable of delivering good ZBoxes. They are well worth thinking about, particularly when an enticing looking theme comes along.
