Threads is a subscription box from Zavvi that’s been around for a few months now and is rather a companion to their better-known ZBox.
Zavvi advertise this subscription as delivering a book and a T-Shirt each month. The books are of varied types, including graphics novels and paperback fiction.
Being someone who likes books (but already has rather a lot of geek T-Shirts), this is one of those subscriptions that seems like it should be a winner for me. Of course, statements like that always depend on the type of books chosen and the quality of those books.
I ordered the June 2017 box, although was slightly surprised that this didn’t arrive until well into July. Having subscribed to the ZBox before, I really shouldn’t be that surprised, as the dates tend to just be suggestions.
The box did arrive safely through Royal Mail, with exactly the same brown card packaging as the ZBox. The box did have a decent amount of weight to it, but there was no information card included.
If you are thinking of subscribing, the standard pricing for Threads is £11.98 GBP ($15 USD) per month, once postage within the UK is included. There are discounts available for longer subscriptions. I took advantage of a short-term promotion to save money on this one.
Box Contents
Donnie Darko T-Shirt (Exclusive)
There’s no information card included to say for sure, but my recollection is that Zavvi state that there will be an exclusive T-Shirt every month. I suspect that this T-Shirt is also unofficial.
This particular design works really well, including the Donnie Darko style rabbit. It’s always a nice subtle blue-on-blue print, which is a style that I’ve always liked.
I’ll assign a value of the T-Shirt standard here of $10 USD.
The Sherlock Holmes Book
This is a hardcover release from 2015, running to over 300 pages. It’s coffee table style, although printed closer to A4 size.
This is one to dip in and out of, with features about all of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories, typically a five or six page plot summary, as well as some other short articles (for instance, one mentions some post Doyle stories that might be worth a read).
I always like receiving books in geek boxes and this is a good type to include, accessible to a wide group of readers.
You can check out The Sherlock Holmes book on Amazon.com. I’ll use their value of $14 USD as the point for the box valuation. The cover price is slightly more, but this reminds me of the type of book that’s made for sale at discount chains.

Box Review
A good small box with two interesting items inside.
I like both of the items and both carry some value. I make the value $24 USD, which is above the cost price.
Two items doesn’t sound that many, but it’s exactly what was promised and I can see this style of box appealing to a certain group of geek box fans.
I will certainly pick up Threads again. If you like both books and T-Shirts, you’ve found a winner here.
