My Geek Box Review – January 2016

My Geek Box is a box that I have a love/hate relationship with. I’m still receiving them, as it’s proved very difficult to cancel my subscription due to faults with their software (this is now claimed to be resolved, but I’m still awaiting a refund of nearly £100 GBP of additional payments made from a second credit card).

The boxes have also been very hit and miss.

But, it is one of the key players in the market for geek subscription boxes sent from within the UK, being part of the same family as Zavvi.

There have been lots of little improvements made to the service in the past few months, including more convenient shipping through Royal Mail (and an email to tell you that your box is being delivered, that only ever arrives on the morning of the delivery). However, the box still misses having an information card included with it.

This month, with the theme “Legends”, the box arrived bulging, with a clear indentation where the contents had to be squashed into the box. Thankfully, nothing was damaged. The box does have an outer plastic sleeve as well, which helps during transit.

The subscription price within the UK, paid on a monthly basis, is £17.99 GBP ($26 USD). Like most boxes, there are discounts available if you commit to longer terms.

Box Contents

Zelda Shield T-Shirt

My first thought when looking at this T-Shirt was that it seems much larger than normal (even for an extra large), but having checked it against other T-Shirts, I think it’s an optical illusion, purely because the shield was small.

I’ve never been into Zelda, so it took me quite a while to work out what the image was for, particularly as My Geek Box don’t supply an information card.

As there T-Shirts go, this is pleasant looking enough, but a long way from a “must wear”.

I’ll value this at $10 USD, which is the standard amount I use for T-Shirts.

Zelda Key Ring

Well, it wouldn’t be a geek box without a key ring!

This is well-made and rattly metallic one.

There are lots of Zelda key rings available on Amazon.com.

It’s unlikely that this one will ever get used, but it’s better made than many. I value it at $5 USD.

Spider-man Vinyl Sticker

A small and totally pointless item in my opinion, even though I like Spider-man.

I still always picture these boxes as being more for an adult audience – or at least of the age range where stickers aren’t used all that much.

I’ll charitably value this at $2 USD.

Halo 5 16-Month Calendar

This is a useful item. I’m rather surprised that it’s the only calendar that I’ve received in a geek box.

You can see the Halo 5 Calendar here on Amazon.com.

I’m not a Halo player, but I like the artwork and I am using this one. A word of warning – it does list US holiday dates, many of which are rather different to UK ones.

One small observation. This is a 16 month calendar, which started from September 2015, so it’s clearly been sitting around for a while.

The price on the back of the calendar is $8 USD. For a slightly dated calendar, I’m going to go with a more typical price of $5 USD, which I think is fair.

New X-Men Collected Comics Paperback

Always good to receive a book and I’ll certainly give this a read.

This collects New X-Men 114-117 and Annual 2001 and includes the “E Is For Extinction” story arc.

I haven’t followed this series, but it looks like this is a 2001 run and there are reviews from this time period. The copyright and first printing date however are both listed as 2011, so it looks like this has been re-released in some form.

Not sure quite why such an old volume was shipped, but at least this is the first in the series.

This is quite hard to find in new condition at a reasonable price. I will value this at $15 USD.

Superman Bath Duck

A fun item from the prolific UK supplier of fun nerdy items for subscription boxes, Paladone. This rubber duck will be floating around in my bath soon.

I remember seeing another duck from the same series, a Batman one, advertised as the extra item for premium subscribers in Lootchest recently. I missed that then, but thought it looked cool, so I’m glad to have got Superman.

You can purchase the DC Comics Superman Bath Duck on Amazon.com.

The official UK retail price for this is £5 GBP, so I’ll equate this to the US equivalent at the current exchange rate, $7 USD.

Box Review

Some solid value in this My Geek Box. I make that $44 USD of content, with only the Spider-man sticker coming across as a truly useless item.

Very happy with the calendar, the comic paperback and the Superman duck. The rest of the items are acceptable too.

Perhaps My Geek Box is on the upturn, as that’s two boxes of value in a row.

I do really hope that they are really able to get their subscription and payment problems sorted and all the issues with customers who were wrongly charged resolved. That’s the only thing holding me back from giving a full recommendation.

Seems like My Geek Box is back on the up!
