Loot Crate Geek Box Review – September 2015

The Loot Crate theme for September 2015 was “Summon” – a word with a lot possible different interpretations.

For the previous two months, I’ve been impressed with the Loot Crate box and the shipping to the UK. This time was rather different. Shipping took closer to three weeks than one and the box that arrived was on the small and light side.

As always, this was safely packaged and the UK part of the delivery completed by Royal Mail.

The standard cost for a one-month rolling subscription, delivered to the UK, is $29.95 USD (about £20 GBP). There are discounts available for longer-term subscriptions.

Box Contents

Pikachu Hat

No T-Shirt again that month. I presume that Loot Crate T-Shirts are gone for good.

I imagine that, if you have children of the right age bracket, this Pokemon character hat will get worn – but I’ve never thought of that as the typical Loot Crate market.

These Pikachu hats sell for $15 USD on Amazon.com.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft Stress Ball

Presumably, this is a sponsored item to raise awareness of this game.

It’s like a traditional collectible card game (think Magic The Gathering), but you buy virtual packets of cards and play online.

Value for this? A charitable $5 USD to me, although perhaps an obsessive fan would pay more.

A nondescript looking item, plain, but with a use. As stress balls go, this is light and I’d expect that the life span from prolonged squeezing would be limited.

Supernatural 1967 Die-Cast Replica Car (Exclusive)

This is a high value item in the crate. Having never followed Supernatural, I don’t know much about this, apart from to say it’s different to the useful vinyl toys.

This is a 1:43 replica.

Although currently exclusive, this will be on sale more widely later in the year.

The current pre-order price for the Supernatural Car is $30 USD on Amazon.com.

Homer Simpson Golden Buddha

Always good to see cartoon inspired items in geek boxes. Here’s hoping for more from Family Guy, American Dad, Bob’s Burgers and other similar franchises.

This is a Buddha style decorative piece, coloured golden and in the shape of the famous dad from The Simpsons.

You can buy a 7 inch Homer Buddha on Amazon.com.

This 3 inch version is much less detailed and not very suited to display. I’ve seen other photos and chosen to keep this sealed in the box. I’d estimate a value of $10 USD.

Loot Crate Master Summoner Mobile Game

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft Coin and Free Card Pack

These are both in the same photo as I originally assumed that they were part of the same game.

Master Summoner is a mobile game that also uses five press out cards in the Loot Crate magazine. I’ve haven’t bothered, but from the description it’s just a random five card version of Rock-Paper-Scissors. Value of $1 USD based on similar mobile games.

The Summoner: Heroes of Warcraft coin is another promotional piece. I’m sure free incentives to get new players and readily available and there are better offers if this is for you. Playing doesn’t interest me at all. Another value of $1 USD for me, purely based on the coin being unusual.

Loot Crate September 2015 Magazine And Badge

The magazine contains descriptions of the items and some short articles. It also has the press out cards for the game.

No real value for these, but useful to have them in the box.

Box Review

There is a high value here. I make that $62 value for the $30 shipping cost.

That is rather inflated by the high list price for the Supernatural car.

Where this crate is let down is the usefulness of the items. A lot more promotional items than normal, a hat which most people just won’t be able to wear and some collectibles that are less mainstream than usual.

I have seen some other reviews fo the Loot Crate September 2015 box and there are people who are raving about the Supernatural car. It certainly is well made.

But something about this box doesn’t do it for me in the way that other geek subscription boxes have.

I do think that Loot Crate should bring back the monthly T-Shirts, as they add value to these boxes.

Loot Crate will be one of those mystery boxes I continue to dip into, but not every month. A lot will depend on the announced theme and spoilers.
