Loot Crate Geek Box Review – October 2017

The Loot Crate geek subscription box continues to be one that has made it into the mainstream.

This is a United States based box. It usually comes with all exclusive items inside. Each month comes with a theme. For October 2017, this was Mythical, with the box coming also with a small promotional magazine with details about the items.

This is the second of a three month subscription for me, which I picked up during a sale.

For normal monthly pricing, shipped to the UK, you’re looking at £24 GBP ($30 USD). That price does alter sometimes depending on the exchange rate. Loot Crate do charge in GBP for sales to the UK, which is convenient.

I believe that they now also ship the UK subscriptions from somewhere in the UK. The no longer has a customs label and also carries a UK return address. That’s good if you’re worried about being hit by customs charges.

The package this time arrived safely through Royal Mail, earlier in the month than it often arrives and in a larger box than normal.

Box Contents

Ghostbusters T-Shirt (Exclusive)

Not too sure what to make of this.

The design is bold, but I prefer a bit of subtlety. Not one I’m likely to wear out of the house.

I value this at the T-Shirt standard of $10 USD.

Stranger Things Collectible (Exclusive)

This is the main item in the box, which comes from Stranger Things, a show I haven’t watched, but which looks interesting.

In the unboxing I muddled up artist J Salvador, who is credited with this collectible, with a writer with a similar name. Suffice to say, J Salvador has put together an interesting model, with a figure, base and wall, which I’m told reflects a memorable moments from the series.

It looks as though this is also the first of a series of collaborations. I don’t know if these are planned to run every month or not.

This is unusual, so particularly hard to value. As it takes the place of the standard large model or Funko!, I’ll go with the common $10 USD value point that those items often go for.

Thor and Loki Figure (Exclusive)

This is a small box with plastic pieces that fit together to form a Thor vs Loki model. It’s an official Marvel item.

It’s the second of a series of these figures from the PhatMojo line (the first was in the September 2017 Loot Crate).

To be honest, I’m not really a fan. They just look like bits of cheap plastic.

I’ll use the same value as the similar item last month of $5 USD.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Bookmark (Exclusive)

This is a Mr Pointy bookmark and it’s a simple wooden design that fits over a page.

I’m always happy to receive bookmarks in geek boxes and this one is no exception.

There are some Buffy The Vampire Slayer bookmarks available on Amazon.com.

Being an exclusive, this one doesn’t feature there, of course.

For a price point, I’ll go with bookmarks of a similar style and assign what I think is a fair value at $5 USD.

Robot Pin (Exclusive)

This is one of those fairly meaningless items to me that are in every Loot Crate.

I couldn’t even put this spooky design as a favourite, although the production quality is as good as always.

The pin comes with a reminder to unlock several promotional digital bonuses online (which lock like a comic and a character for the Marvel Puzzle Quest game).

I’ll value the pin at $1 USD.

Box Review

Some unusual items, but this one was really missing something.

I get $31 USD of value, which is pretty much bang on the cost price.

There just isn’t a must have item in here for me. I guess fans would put the Stranger Things collectible in that category.

Three of the five items were pretty cheap, so that brings down the box value.

I’m not too keen on the PhatMojo figures. I would certainly reconsider buying the boxes I thought they were going to be in Loot Crate regularly. The T-Shirt is a fail for me too.

I did like the bookmark, but I know it won’t be to everyone’s tastes.

I know you can’t win them all. I’m sure there are people who love this box.
