The advance advertising for Comic Block interested me this month, with items from Back To The Future and Heroes advertised. I’ve always enjoyed the Back To The Future films and have followed Heroes throughout its TV run, so Comic Block offered lots of potential.
Previously, I haven’t found much additional value to the box above the raw cost of the items, particularly when postage to the UK is included. The real value here comes from the carefully chosen items in the box.
Including postage, this goes for $26.49 USD (£18 GBP). There are often small discounts available to save a dollar or two, for instance, by subscribing to multiple boxes or by paying for several months upfront.
Shipping was fast as usual, taking around a week from when this was mailed from Canada.
Box Contents
Spawn T-Shirt (Exclusive)
This T-Shirt has a solid visual design and ties in well with the comic nature of the box.
These always come printed on high quality T-Shirt stock.
I value this at the T-Shirt standard of $10 USD.
Heroes Vengeance #1 (Exclusive Cover)
This is a prequel to the TV series Heroes Reborn and a pretty good read. The publisher is Titan Comics.
As best I can see, this is an open-ended run, made up of a series of 5 issue stories.
The cover price is $3.99 USD.
Back To The Future #1 (Exclusive Cover)
The inside cover of this one shows 34 different cover versions – that’s a lot to collect.
I’m expecting to obtain several more through other subscriptions.
This is published by IDW. I can’t tell if it’s a limited run or not, but there are currently 3 issues advertised.
A bit disappointed with this comic, mainly due to the style of artwork, which is rather superficial. Not sure if I’ll stick with it or not.
The bagging also left something to be desired, with a sealed bag, which had to be ripped open and discarded.
The cover price for the standard edition of this comic is $3.99 USD.
Lara Croft And The Frozen Omen #1 (Exclusive Cover)
This is published by Dark Horse Comics. Although I know the central character is popular, it’s not a series that I’m likely to continue with.
The cover price is $3.99 USD and this is the first of a five issue mini series.
This is another comic that wouldn’t fit back in the provided bag.
Venom Print
This is a comic book sized cardboard print of Venom, by Lee Howard, which was look good framed.
100 of these prints were signed by the artist, but I wasn’t lucky enough to receive one of those.
I generally value this style of artwork at $2 USD.

Box Review
Pretty good!
You know what you’re going to get with Comic Block. Three comics including exclusive covers that you might not already have picked up, plus a T-Shirt and a collectible.
I make the value $24 USD, which is slightly below the cost price, but you could argue that the exclusives will sell for more.
I am still waiting for Comic Block to include a graphic novel, which was promised in the early advertising. I also think that the bagging and boarding of the comics leaves a lot to be desired. I’m not an avid collector, but for a mystery box which is aimed at that market, presenting comics in their finest form is so important.
I probably won’t buy Comic Block on a regular basis, but it’s good to see a box like this on the market.
