Now in its third month of operation, Sci-Fi Block is an established part of the Nerd Block family.

This box provides a selection of science fiction related mystery items each month. These primarily seem to relate to TV shows and films, rather than books or comics.

This box has the distinction of being the first of the 2016 geek subscription box releases to arrive with me (I did receive some December 2015 boxes well into January). Shipping from Canada to the UK took just over a week, with the box arriving safe and well-packaged as usual.

The standard subscription cost, including shipping to the UK is $32.49 USD (£22 GBP) on a monthly subscription. The box guarantees an exclusive T-Shirt each month.

The box always contains an information card about the items, which is useful. There is no specific theme for each month, at least not beyond the overall sci-fi connection.

Doctor Who TARDIS Schematic T-Shirt (Exclusive)

As a Doctor Who fan, I love this T-Shirt. One of my all time favourites to receive inside a geek mystery box.

This shows the TARDIS in outline form, with the walls coming apart and a peak at the console. Great colour scheme too.

I’ll use the standard T-Shirt value here, of $10 USD.

The Matrix Neo Funko POP! Vinyl

A classic film represented here with this Funko POP! Vinyl figure. This is rather a good figure from one of the memorable film series, although smaller than most of the Funko POP! range.

Iron Giant Badges

A rather strange choice as this is an old film and I really wouldn’t think of it as a cult classic.

These will just go straight in my badge box. I’ll value them at $2 USD.

Star Trek Skele-Trek Blind Bag Mini Figure

These are dated 2013, so they’re probably an overstock item.

These are quite different – painted figures of Star Trek characters designed to look like skeletons.

You can buy the Star Trek Skele-Trek Blind Bag Figures on Amazon.com. They sell for around $2 USD if you buy them as a set, a bit more individually, but as this is an old line I’ll use the lower valuation.

Doctor Who Stickers

These are fun decal stickers, dated from 2012 and clearly synonymous with the 11th Doctor era of the show. I also had a spare sticker, which had found its way into my box.

I’m going to go with a $3 USD valuation here to reflect typical pricing and the fact that these are a branded (but slightly dated) item.

The Terminator Endo Skeleton Figure

This is a retro styled figure made by ReAction figures, and I believe it’s the first item that I own from them.

There’s something charming about the retro feel of this, particularly with how small the figure is (very different to many of the oversized figures on the market now).

This is another slightly dated item, made in 2013.

Box Review

It’s always good to receive two Doctor Who items in a box. This includes one of the coolest T-Shirts I’ve seen, so with that, the box is a winner for me.

What is unusual is that the T-Shirt is also the only exclusive item. That’s odd for a box from the Nerd Block family.

What’s even more unusual is that most of the items are dated. The Funko POP! is cool, but looks like it was released in early 2015. All the other items date back several years. I can’t see a date for the Iron Giant badges, but I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if these are several years old.

I don’t have a particular problem with these being old (and probably overstock) items, as I can see either fun or value with everything, but it’s an interesting path for Sci-Fi Block to be taking.

The value, at $35 USD total, is only slightly up on the shipped box price, but I’ve been conservative with my valuation and there are three items of decent value here, as well as filler that is more interesting than the boxes often contain.

I certainly intend to continue to buy Sci-Fi Block as and when funds allow. It’s one of the boxes most closely aligned with my interests in fandom and so far, the contents haven’t disappointed.
