The contents of the first Loot Crate I ordered impressed me, but the overall experience was really let down by excessively slow shipping to the UK.
I decided to take the plunge on another three month subscription and am pleased to say that the shipping speed was much improved, taking about a week and a half to the UK. This was delayed a few days as I missed the original delivery attempt, but arrived safely through Royal Mail. Everything arrived, well-packaged, in one of the biggest boxes of this type that I’ve seen.
The standard cost, including shipping to the UK, is $29.95 USD (about £20 GBP, plus international transaction charges) on a monthly subscription. The three month plan reduces this to $28 USD.
This month’s theme was Heroes 2, a follow up to a previous box. The superheroes theme is a very easy one for geek mystery box companies to do well with, so I had high hopes for this one.
Box Contents
Q-Pop Batman ’66 (Exclusive)
This is 1960s TV style Batman, complete with a comic book style sign that you can write on. This is also my first Q-Pop.
The regular Batman Q-Pop sells for $15 USD on Amazon.com. The differences to the exclusive version aren’t major, but being exclusive does, of course, add to the value. In any account, this is a good lead item.
Batman Multi Tool Key Ring
The second Batman item of the month. Useful, but heavy and rather impractical to carry around in a pocket. This has two screwdriver heads, as well as the bottle opener. The Amazon reviews also complain that the black paint soon rubs off against keys.
The Batman Multi-Tool sells for $14 USD on Amazon.com.
Brawlhalla Game Download
This is advertised as a platform brawler for PC and Mac. I very rarely try these “free” games out, so the value isn’t there for me, but the download game usually costs $12.99 USD from Steam.
Star Trek Air Freshener
This is vanilla scented. I can’t find the exact one online, but this will certainly get used and would likely retail around $5 USD.
Wonder Woman Mini Poster
I do like the retro style of the mini poster and this is one of the rare posters that would work well in a frame. As it stands, I value it at $2 USD.
Zelda Wrist Band
This is sweat band style. I don’t anyone who wears these (myself included). Let’s say $3 USD in value.
Loot Crate Badge
No real value, but I like the idea that there’s a badge with the month’s theme included each time.
Loot Crate Mini Magazine
Likewise, no real value, but the details of the products included are useful and it’s little touches like this, and the inner design of the packaging box, that makes nerd crates like Loot Crate stand out.
The League Of Regrettable Superheroes Book (Exclusive Edition)
I’m a reader and I love receiving books of all types in boxes. This profiles 50 superheroes (or groups) who didn’t take off and is a recent (June 2015) release.
The exclusive nature is because this is printed as a 6″ by 8″ book (the original edition of Regrettable Superheroes is 7″ by 9″). The cover is also changed around a bit. It does mean that the print size is on the smaller size.
The original version of the book sells for $17 USD on Amazon.com and I’d attach a similar value to the exclusive version here.

Box Review
This is a very strong box, with lots of items.
The biggest surprise is the lack of a T-Shirt. I don’t need any more T-Shirts, but I do enjoy taking them out of the box and they do add value.
As this stands, there’s $68 USD of value here at retail prices. That doesn’t take into account the value of exclusive items, although I personally would not count the items with low perceived value (the downloadable game and sweat band, for example) towards this.
In any account, this is all well above the cost price of the box.
I love the book and look forward to finding time to dive into it further. The Batman Q-Pop is one of the coolest of the exclusive figures for a while too.
The theme for Loot Crate next month is Villains 2, which is also full of potential. I’m glad that Loot Crate have sorted their international shipping problems and so I’m happy to recommend Loot Crate now.
