Comic Block provides subscribers with a selection of different comic items every month. That includes comics, but also comic inspired items, often tied in with superhero movie releases.
I’ve kept my subscription alive for a while due to the promise of grandfathered pricing, but I notice that that has been quietly dropped. With the standard of the items not being as high as other members of the Nerd Block family, I suspect that I’ll be pausing the subscription shortly.
There’s no particular theme to the box, other than being comic themed. The box did arrive safely through Royal Mail and, as usual, arrived well-packaged with the stylish Comic Block outer block.
The standard pricing for Comic Block, including shipping from Canada to the UK, is $33 USD (that’s around £26 GBP), rather more expensive for UK subscribers than it was a few months ago due to the drop in the value of the pound.
The box came with an information card describing the items. It also came with $10 of credit for Shirt Punch and $10 of credit for the new Nerd Block shop. Due to the limitations of these, I’m not including them in the box value, although that credit may be more useful for some.
Box Contents
Luke Cage T-Shirt (Exclusive)
This is an official Marvel T-Shirt and it’s a good design in white and yellow.
I’ll value this at the T-Shirt standard of $10 USD.
Marvel Shoe Laces
These are billed as the main item for the month on the information card.
The shoe laces are made by Esquire Footwear and have prints of different Marvel characters on them, including Spider-man, Captain America and a mashup of comic book logos.
This is a nice quirky item that fits in well with the comic book theme. I don’t have many shoes that these will work with, but I can see them easily jazzing up a pair of trainers or gym shows.
I can’t easily find this set of Marvel Shoe Laces on Amazon.com, but based on similar items I’ll assign a value of $10 USD here.
The World According To Wolverine Book
The July 2016 Comic Block had another book of a similar style, focused on The Joker.
I liked that book and I also like The World According To Wolverine. It’s a smaller sized square hardback book with quirky features about Wolverine. Where this stands out is that many of the pages have special features, including stickers and pull-out notes.
You can see The World According To Wolverine on Amazon.com.
This is widely available from Amazon sellers who undercut the official Amazon.com pricing. Based on that, I’ll assign a midpoint value of $12 USD.
Supergirl Comic #1
This is the first in a new series, coming as part of the DC Universe rebirth.
I’ve been enjoying the recent TV series, although this looks like it’s aimed at a rather younger audience.
The cover price is $2.99 USD.
Vikings Comic #1 (Exclusive Cover)
This comic was received in a bag that had to be cut open and couldn’t be reused (a better month than usual, as this was the only comic fitting this description).
It’s a Titan Comics release, with a cover price of $3.99 USD.
I haven’t followed this as a TV series, but it looks like a close tie in, which will interest fans.
Britannia Comic #1
This is a comic with more of an adult feel, printed on heavy stock paper and released by Valiant.
The cover price is $3.99 USD, although interestingly, this also marks this as a second printing.
It’s the first of a four issue detective series, set in Ancient Rome and has an interesting feel to it.
Doom Patrol Comic #1
Another first issue, this is from DC’s Young Animal imprint.
I know that this is a long-standing collection of heroes, although I’ve never followed any of the previous incarnations.
The style is rather simplistic, so I don’t think that this will be a keeper for me.
The cover price is $3.99 USD.

Box Review
A pretty decent Comic Block selection, which I make out as having $47 USD of value.
Four comics is the most that I can recall their being in the Comic Block box. They’re not all brilliant, but this is a good way to try out new series. There’s only one exclusive cover this time.
I see the best item as being The World According To Wolverine book, which is pretty fun to explore.
There are some decent clothing related items to, including the T-Shirt and the show laces.
I still think that these recent boxes have been missing a toy or collectible item, probably a Funko. Hopefully, that’s something that can make a return in future boxes.
All in all, this is one of the better Comic Blocks. This is a set of boxes that has plenty to offer when it’s on form.
