Sci-Fi Block Geek Box Review – December 2015

The latest subscription box added to the Nerd Block family is Sci-Fi Block. As you’d anticipate from the name, this is a box that comes with science fiction related goodies each month. So far, these have mostly been based on TV series and movies.

I had hoped to review the first Sci-Fi Block, which was released in November 2015. My payment was taken within hours of the block going on sale. Unfortunately, there were teething problems with the subscription software and my block was one of a number that were never dispatched. From reading online forums, it appears that I was far from alone in suffering from this issue. It also took me two lots of emails to get the payment refunded – not good customer service.

I missed a great block.

On the positive, the second Sci Fi Block did arrive with me safely in the UK, coming in distinctive packaging and arriving in under a week from dispatch.

If you are interested in your own subscription, including shipping to the UK this costs $32.49 USD (£22 GBP) on a monthly subscription. As with the other blocks, all of the Sci-Fi Blocks include an original T-Shirt.

There is no theme to Sci-Fi Block, although this month did advertise Star Wars items.

Box Contents

Stormtrooper T-Shirt (Exclusive)

Even though I’m really not the biggest Star Wars fan, I’m happy with this T-Shirt.

An easily recognised design with a splash of bright colours, printed on a traditional black T-Shirt.

I’ll value this at the usual T-Shirt figure of $10 USD.

Captain Malcolm Reynolds Funko POP! Vinyl

I’ve yet to watch Firefly, although I’m sure I will once I catch up the huge volume on Science Fiction on TV right now.

I do like the design of this figure. He even has a gun in his right hand.

Captain Malcolm Reynolds Funko POP! Vinyl is available on Amazon.com, where he sells for about $10 USD.  He’s a 2015 release.

This was one of five different Firefly POP! Vinyl figures which were randomly placed into Sci-Fi Block this month.

Star Trek Tribble Screen Cleaner (Exclusive)

I think that this is my favourite item of the box, just because it’s different and something that I will use (it beats keeping a duster near my monitor).

It’s hard to put a value on this. There are lots of Tribble items available on Amazon.com. They are all reassuringly expensive.

I’ll use $5 USD as a conservative value for this.

Ray Gun Key Ring (Exclusive)

Plus point. This is a nice metallic design, well-packaged, exclusive and small enough that you could put it onto an existing set of keys without adding much weight.

Downside? This is yet another key ring in a subscription box.

I’ll value this at $2 USD.

X-Files Patch (Exclusive)

I’m looking forward to the new X-Files limited season.

As filler items go, this is one of the least useful, as I can’t imagine taking the time to sew it onto anything.

I’ll stick with a standard value of $2 USD.

Star Wars Prints by Lee Howard

These are three stylish designs that will look good framed.

It’s unusual to get three prints together in a box. These could easily be positioned as three pictures, next to one another.

These aren’t exclusive, so I won’t overvalue them, but a value of $2 USD each ($6 USD total) seems reasonable.

Box Review

A good Sci-Fi Block. I calculate $35 USD of value, which isn’t outstanding, but the items are interesting and they would cost a lot more if shipping was considered.

I really like the Stormtrooper T-Shirt and the Tribble screen cleaner.

The POP! Vinyl is great to have too, although I think that Sci-Fi Block has already proved popular enough that it could have exclusives.

I’ll certainly be buying Sci-Fi Block again. I can’t say exactly which months, as there are so many boxes in the Nerd Block family now that I have to pick and choose. But, if you’re a Sci-Fi lover, you should get this box.
