Nerd Block Geek Box Review – July 2015

Nerd Block is one of the most popular of all the geek subscription boxes, shipping internationally to the UK for a very reasonable price.

The July box topic was “Humanity’s Last Hope”. One of the most interesting topic choices I’ve seen for a while and with lots of potential to cater for a wide geek audience.

Shipping from Canada to the UK took around a week, with the last leg delivered by Royal Mail. The standard price for this was $32.49 USD (around £22 GBP).

Box Contents

“Sssweep The Leg” T-Shirt (Exclusive)

This took some figuring out, but I believe that this is a mashup T-Shirt.

The top half of the quote is based on “Sweep The Leg” from The Karate Kid and the villian gang Cobra Cais.

The bottom half of the quote (and image) relates to villian Cobra Commander (from G.I. Joe).

Not a very obvious mashup and rather a lot of work, but the design and prints look good. I value this at $10 USD. The card doesn’t actually say that this is an exclusive and there’s no Shirt Punch tag on it, but I have to assume this is exclusive as Nerd Block T-Shirts always are.

Spike Titans 4.5″ Vinyl Figure (Exclusive)

I’ve not watched much of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but I can tell that people will like this vampire vinyl figure.

The closest Spike figure I can find is a 3″ vinyl, which comes as a Buffy mystery figure in a blind bag (so you could other characters from the series just as easily).

I’ll value this at a standard $15 USD (but they are already selling for more on Ebay).

Ghostbusters Tyvek Wallet (Exclusive)

Another exclusive. This is material that seems almost like paper, but is actually a strong product made of plastic fibre, so difficult to tear.

The downside of this one to me is that there’s nowhere to put coins.

I also got a Simpsons wallet like this in a Loot Crate Mystery Crate recently. I’ll value this the same at $10 USD.

Iron Man Pocket POP! Keychain

This is the first Pocket POP! I’ve had and looks equally good on its own or on a keychain.

The Iron Man Pocket POP! sells for around $6 USD on Amazon.com.

Transformers Dark Of The Moon Dangler

This is rather a throw away, dated 2011 and has been available as a clearance item in the UK.

As best I can tell, there are eight to collect in random blind bags, and these are silver 1″ tall, designed to use on a key chain or dangle off an electronic device. Still a fun item to have.

I’ve just found a job lot of them available for £0.25 GBP ($0.40 USD) each, but I’ll value this more charitably at $2 USD.

Mad Max Fury Road Comic (Exclusive Cover)

This is the third of four issues of a Mad Max Fury Road prequel series from DC’s Vertigo brand.

This is the first of two issues to tell Max’s story (one of my dislikes is having to hunt down another issue to get the conclusion).

The comic comes boarded and bagged, with a cover price of $4.99 USD.

Box Review

A pretty good collection, with $48 USD of value and little filler, around 50% more than the Nerd Block price. The real value could be higher with the exclusive items.

I particularly like the Iron Man Pocket POP! this month and hope to get more Pocket POP!s in boxes. They’re a very good size for packing as well.

The comic is an interesting read and all the items have some merit to them.

I will continue to buy Nerd Block, as they make a real effort to get exclusives and provide fast delivery to the UK. I do hope see a return of the paperback books next month as well.
