It’s quite hard to go wrong with Loot Crate if you’re looking for an established and mainstream geek subscription box.

Loot Crate also comes with exclusive items every month, usually with every item being an exclusive.

The September 2017 box was no exception. I grabbed this during a sale and the box arrived in the UK safely, although a little battered. Quite a small and lightweight box this time, but Loot Crate is unusual in that it produces different box sizes each month.

The external part of the box always looks similar, with a simple and effective black design. The inside of the box is where the artwork shines. In this case, the box folds in reverse to look like a packet of cereal for robots.

The monthly cost to get Loot Crate in the UK is £24 GBP ($30 USD). That price does seem to change occasionally depending on the exchange rate. Although Loot Crate are US based, they charge in GBP for sales to the UK.

The box comes with a small promotional magazine, which is useful to learn more about the contents.

Box Contents

Bladerunner 2049 T-Shirt (Exclusive)

This is a simple but effective design. You can’t go too far wrong with black.

I value this at the T-Shirt standard of $10 USD.

Star Trek The Next Generation Comic (Exclusive)

This is an IDW release with the Loot Crate logo in the corner.

This one is pretty cool as it’s not just a different cover, but it’s an entirely exclusive comic and story.

There’s no price listed, so I’m going to assume a standard comic price of $4 USD.

Star Wars R2-D2 Model (Exclusive)

This is rather fun. Its a wooden board with pieces cut into it to be punched out.

They then fit together to form a model of R2-D2.

Now, officially this is an exclusive, although you can buy the model as part of a R2-D2 model and book set on Amazon.com.

Based on the pricing for the larger set, I’ll value this at $10 USD.

Aliens Model (Exclusive)

These are small plastic pieces which form into a small model. The end result would look good painted.

The official title is “Queen Takes Bishop”.

This doesn’t do too much for me. I’ll value it at $5 USD.

Robot Pin (Exclusive)

This isn’t a bad design as pins go, but I always find these hard to value.

For completeness, I’ll use $1 USD.

The pin also unlocks a digital comic which can be downloaded via the Loot Crate website.

Box Review

I get a round $30 USD of value here, exactly equal to the cost price. That sounds reasonable as I picked this up during a sale.

The items are all exclusive and based around a fun theme. I particularly like the way an original comic has been included.

I do think that this somehow seems one item shorter than it should have been, or that one of the small items (the Aliens model or the pin), could have been replaced with something more substantial. But that’s how Loot Crate normally is.

I have two more boxes on my subscription, so will see what more there is to come. A lot of liking Loot Crate comes with the choice of theme. Generally, they do a good job here.
