Horror Block Geek Box Review – June 2016

The last Horror Block I picked up was rather strange, with a complete move away from items relating to horror franchises. Instead there were non-descrypt items like zombie egg cups.

I’ve stayed away for a few months, but thankfully the most recent boxes have looked quite a bit better. They were also advertising that June 2016 would contain two Funko POP! Vinyls. So, I decided to give the June 2016 Horror Block a go.

The standard price for this box, including shipping to the UK is $32.49 USD (£24 GBP). With the change in exchange rate, it’s likely to be more expensive now for UK buyers, but I’ll use the price that was there at the time of purchase.

This box is advertised as always containing an exclusive T-Shirt and a copy of Rue Morgue (usually the standard edition of the horror magazine, or sometimes a special library edition). To me, those are both good reasons to subscribe.

The box arrived safely in the UK and in good condition. It also contained a $10 USD voucher code for Shirt Punch, which covers the T-Shirts, but not shipping. I’m slowly building up a collection of those, so I’ll see if there’s anything worth spending them on.

Horror Block isn’t themed, but the box does contain an information card with details of the items.

Box Contents

Jaws T-Shirt (Exclusive)

This is a fun T-Shirt. I like colour schemes like this where the geek reference is there and visible, but not too “in your face”.

I value this at the T-Shirt standard of $10 USD.

Willow Funko POP! Vinyl

This is Willow from Buffy The Vampire Slayer and is POP! 122 in the POP! Television series.

A great collectible vinyl figure and one from a selection of Buffy POP!s that could have been included.

You can get the Willow Funko POP! Vinyl on Amazon.com. The typical selling price is $11 USD.

Vaun Funko POP! Vinyl

This was a two POP! month and the second one this time was listed a POP! from The Strain.

I got Vaun, which is a good horror zombie looking figure. I haven’t seen the TV show, so don’t know much more than this, but looks like one worth watching when I free up more time.

You buy the Vaun Funko POP! Vinyl on Amazon. This one carries a value of $8 USD.

A Nightmare On Elm Street Pillow Case (Exclusive)

This is something a bit different, but it actually works very well within the confines of a geek box. It’s small, light and a useful item.

This is a black pillow case with red (blood) writing, warning people not to fall asleep.

I haven’t put this on my bed yet, as I don’t know if this would help when I’m already in a sleepless mood, but this is great addition to the product lines included in the Nerd Block family.

This is an exclusive, but I’ve found similar themed pillow cases selling around the $8 USD price point, which is what I’ll use for the overall valuation.

Turbo Kid Blu Ray

This is a first for me! The first time I’ve received a Blu Ray in a geek subscription box (I’ve received DVDs on several occasions).

I’ve never seen this film, but it looks worth a watch. It’s one of the post-apocalyptic style films that’s all the rage right now, with plenty of special features.

You can get Turbo Kid on Blu Ray from Amazon.com in several different formats. There, I can only see it listed in out of stock combo packs, or international versions, all selling for premium prices.

I’m going to value this at a more typical Blu Ray price of $15 USD.

Rue Morgue Magazine #168

This horror magazine is always a good read and adds a lot of value to the box for me.

It would be fantastic if more geek boxes started to carry magazines, or if they just had something meatier than comics to read inside.

The cover price for this one is $10 USD.

Box Review

This has restored my faith in Horror Block!

An excellent box, with $62 USD of value, almost double the box price.

Two POP!s offer something different to me, and it’s hard to go wrong with this selection of items. I always value the Rue Morgue as well (hint to geek box makers – more magazines).

A good T-Shirt, interesting pillow case, plenty of exclusives and a Blu Ray. What more could you want as a horror fan?

Lots of potential for the future of Horror Block. I’ll be keeping an eye open (and staying awake with that pillow case!).
