Horror Block Geek Box Review – January 2016

I tend to enjoy Horror Block but would never pick it up every month. The contents are carefully chosen to match the geek sector of the market that enjoys horror.

The standard price for Horror Block, including shipping to the UK is $32.49 USD (£24 GBP). I picked this one up mainly due to a Christmas deal saving.

As well as horror related items, this box always contains an exclusive T-Shirt.

Shipping from Canada to the UK was good, as nearly always happens with boxes from the Nerd Block family.

All these boxes come with a convenient information card (very useful for people like me who don’t know horror franchises inside out).

Box Contents

They Live T-Shirt (Exclusive)

This Obey T-Shirt celebrates John Carpenter’s birthday month.

I’m really not a fan of skull T-Shirts, but the artwork should appeal to fans of this genre.

This comes printed to the normal high quality of the Shirt Punch branded T-Shirts.

I value this at the T-Shirt standard of $10 USD.

Meat Cleaver Key Ring (Exclusive)

As key rings go, this is a decent design and comes in exclusive packaging.

I do always think of these as a filler item.

There have been similar styled key rings to this in Sci-Fi Block and Nerd Block recently.

I will stick with the same value of $2 USD.

Gravestone Phone Holder (Exclusive)

This is an exclusive item, which comes boxed.

The phone sites between the gravestone and the hand/flower ascending from below. There is also a small hole to thread the phone charger through.

I don’t particularly like the design or have any use for it. I’ll assign a value of $8 USD.

Carrie Film Cell Bookmark

The January 2016 Nerd Block carried a similar film cell bookmark (that one was for Harry Potter).

The idea behind this is that it is a laminated plastic bookmark, with a film cell embedded at the top.

My cell is a close-up of a blood covered Carrie.

These film cell bookmarks are cool items which I’m happy to receive. You can see a selection of film cell bookmarks on Amazon.com.

Although I can’t find this exact bookmark online, I’ll price this at the most common value for this type of item, $12 USD.

“Baby Eats You Alive” Doll’s Head (Exclusive)

Another exclusive boxed item.

It doesn’t work for me. I would find it creepy to have on display, but maybe that’s the intention. But I know that this will really work for some people.

Very hard to value. I’ll use my catch-all figure of $8 USD. It is unique and potentially collectible after all.

Rue Morgue Library #6

This is my favourite item in the box. The full title is”Blood In Four Colours – A Graphic History Of Horror Comics”.

Now that the standard edition of Rue Morgue no longer seems to be being published, there are more of these library editions appearing in the boxes.

They carry a premium price to the standard magazine too, selling at $14.95 USD.

This is 132 pages long, covering comics all the way from Swamp Thing to The Walking Dead. I’m looking forward to diving it.

Scream Horror Magazine Digital Edition

A free digital copy of the latest Scream horror magazine is also included. This is a UK magazine, with print cover prices of £4.50 GBP and $8.99 USD. The digital edition price is the more appealing £1.29 GBP and $1.99 USD and this is also available in some of the unlimited digital magazine subscription packages.

I haven’t come across this magazine before and will certainly give the digital edition a read. I won’t assign a value though, as this is just a one-off enticement to subscribe and it looks as thought these digital giveaways with different companies are often provided.

Box Review

A good Horror Block. The value is here, at $55 USD for the collection of horror items.

For me, it’s missing the franchised items, instead going down the route of providing scary, but generic, contents.

With that said, the Rue Morgue library edition carries enough value (and interesting content) to make this worth having purchased. The comic topic appeals to me and Rue Morgue is not easily available in the UK.

I do also like the bookmark and I can see value in all of the items, bar the key ring.

A lot of thought always goes into the curation of Horror Block. I will continue to pick this up every so often, either when the spoilers look appealing, or even for an interesting edition of Rue Morgue. Worth a try to see if this works for you.
